The Penrith Performing Arts & Visual Arts Galley presents Blak Douglas: The Halfway Line displaying artworks made throughout Dhungutti artist Blak Douglas’ artistic career. The exhibition in Western Sydney acknowledges Douglas’ upbringing in the area.
Douglas has both Dhungutti and Scottish heritage, establishing a reputation as a Sydney based artist in the mid-1990s. He has an expansive art practice that spans painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, public art and performance. His artworks address the social and political realities for Aboriginal Australians using the lived experiences and histories of Aboriginal peoples as inspiration for his works.
The Halfway Line includes various works from Douglas, showing the extensive nature of his career. Works on show include K9 vs Bloodline on the Breadline (2008) which embodies the power to take back control as Aboriginal peoples from governing bodies and policies, and the portrait of Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens and the winner of 2022 Archibald prize Moby Dickens (2022). Each work reflects on Douglas’ role in promoting Aboriginal experiences and voices, along with creating a platform for social and political change in Australia regarding the treatment of Aboriginal peoples.
The Halfway Line will run until 20 July at the Penrith Regional Galley. Find out more information here: https://www.penrithregionalgallery.com.au/events/blak-douglas-the-halfway-line/.
