This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum when over 90% of Australians voted ‘yes’. This changed to constitution to remove a race clause that excluded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from the census. It also shifted Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs from the state governments to the Commonwealth government.
Count Us Together is a collection of images and materials to celebrate Sydney’s involvement in the 1967 referendum. The Aboriginal-Australian Fellowship and the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders campaigned in Sydney to gather the support of politicians, unions and churches.
The exhibition shows some of the heroes that worked for years to change the constitution to improve the human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
